A Two-Stage Process for Conversion of Brewer’s Spent Grain into Volatile Fatty Acids through Acidogenic Fermentation

چکیده
This work is focused on the valorization of brewer’s spent grains (BSG) into volatile fatty acids (VFA) through acidogenic fermentation. VFAs are building blocks for several applications, such as bioplastics’ production. Using acid hydrolysis pre-treatment, batch assays were performed and impact organic load (OL) pH VFA production from BSG hydrolysate was assessed. Regardless condition, produced mainly butyric acetic followed by propionic acid. The OL had a direct total concentration with higher concentrations at highest (40 gCOD L?1). affected individual acid, fermentation products (FP) diversity attained 5.0 40 L?1. To assess potential application biopolymers (such polyhydroxyalkanoates) production, content in hydroxybutyrate (HB) hydroxyvalerate (HV) monomers estimated respective precursors each OL. HV increased pH, maximum 6.0 (ca. 16% C-mol basis). also assessed continuous operation, using an expanded granular sludge bed reactor (EGSB). It shown that successfully converted to without control, achieving productivities than operation mode.

Acidogenic Fermentation Towards Valorisation of Organic Waste Streams into Volatile Fatty Acids
Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been applied over the years for the treatment of a wide variety of organic streams. The advantages of this process over other biological treatments relate mainly to the low cost of bioreactors operation, when compared to aerobic processes, since AD-based treatments offer a cost-effective solution for the treatment of high-strength organic wastes, through economic re...
متن کاملNovel insight into the relationship between organic substrate composition and volatile fatty acids distribution in acidogenic co-fermentation
BACKGROUND Co-fermentation is an attractive technology for improving volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production by treatment of solid organic wastes. However, it remains unclear how the composition of different organic matters in solid waste influences the VFAs distribution, microbial community structure, and metabolic pathway during acidogenic co-fermentation. In this study, different organic wast...
متن کاملSelection of the Strain Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 43121 and Its Application to Brewers' Spent Grain Conversion into Lactic Acid
Six Lactobacillus strains were analyzed to select a bacterium for conversion of brewers' spent grain (BSG) into lactic acid. Among the investigated strains, L. acidophilus ATCC 43121 showed the highest yield of lactic acid production (16.1 g/L after 48 hours) when grown in a synthetic medium. It was then analyzed for its ability to grow on the hydrolysates obtained from BSG after acid-alkaline ...
متن کاملSecond Generation Ethanol Production from Brewers’ Spent Grain
Ethanol production from lignocellulosic biomasses raises a global interest because it represents a good alternative to petroleum-derived energies and reduces the food versus fuel conflict generated by first generation ethanol. In this study, alkaline-acid pretreated brewers’ spent grain (BSG) was evaluated for ethanol production after enzymatic hydrolysis with commercial enzymes. The obtained h...
متن کاملA Two-Stage Continuous Fermentation System for Conversion of Syngas into Ethanol
We have established a two-stage continuous fermentation process for production of ethanol from synthesis gas (syngas) with Clostridium ljungdahlii. The system consists of a 1-L continuously stirred tank reactor as a growth stage and a 4-L bubble column equipped with a cell recycle module as an ethanol production stage. Operating conditions in both stages were optimized for the respective purpos...
